I have noticed that every August, hundreds of sparrows in my neighbourhood congregate in a half dozen trees nearby, every evening for one to two weeks. The noise they make is tremendous! What are they doing?

I saw in an educational channel once that it MIGHT mean they are calling their mate. In short, it's mating season. I'm not vouching for this though. There could be other reasons. Try searching the web. Maybe you'll find some other answers.
